Winona Ryder professional Winona Ryder, was born in Winona Minnesota. The name she was given by her parents in honor of the town in which she was raised. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder is Jewish. Ryder believes that her father is from an ethnically Jewish background. Ryder has the title of being the younger sister of Uria as well as half-siblings Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder moved along with her family in Mendocino County California at the age of seven. They didn't even have electricity. There was no television books were the only way for Ryder to keep her busy and she began to read extensively. In 1983 when she was twelve, Ryder enrolled in the American Conservatory Theatre to take classes in acting. When she was 15, Ryder landed a role in Lucas, her first major film. Ryder suffered from bullying in high school. Her professional acting, she believed to help, could have helped her. It didn't happen. She continued to pursue her goals. She got her break with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988. Ryder continued to be successful in her parts in a variety of films. Ryder was nominated twice for Academy Awards one for her part for her performance in The Age of Innocence (1993).
