Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived in a musical family on 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin of the singer Dionne. As a young girl, Houston started singing professionally in the choir of her church. She was a backing vocalist for Chaka Khosn's single from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mom. In 1981, she briefly was a model, and was featured on the Seventeen Cover. She also performed the backing vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her first gig was as a featured vocalist for the funk group from New York, Material in the year 1981. It was this excellence of her work as a vocalist in the band that caught the attention of major record companies, such as Arista who signed her in 1983 and where she was for the rest of her career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album for an artist in 1985. It featured a number of hits such as How Will I Know You Give Good Love, Saving All My Love For you and The Most Beautiful Love of All. It was instrumental in her achieving seven US chart-topping songs in succession which beat the Beatles. The album was sold to three million people in during its initial year, as well as 25 million around the world. Her first six Grammys. The follow-up album released in 1987 Whitney featuring the hit songs The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built upon her successes, but it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the top-selling performers in history. While the movie itself and the performance of her in it weren't widely praised the soundtrack album and her version of Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You made the singles and albums charts for months, and was sold at 44 million copies around the globe. In 1993, it was also that she married Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition singer with whom she bore her sole daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. Her daily consumption of the drug was well-documented.
